o   1) You must write a response to PART ONE : 500 words, incorporating your required reading into your response. 
o   2) You must write a 1,000 WORD response to Part Two incorporating your required reading into your response and you must Chicago Style for references and notes.
o   3) You must write a 1,000-1,500 word response to Part Three, incorporating your reading and/or research into your response. 
Part ONE: 500 words 
Please analyze ONE of the Civil War Day-By-Day POSTINGS, and describe what you learned within the reading of the course that enhanced or amplified your appreciation of the post you select.  
You must include the date posted and TITLE OF YOUR CHOICE to head this part of your exam.
MAKE specific reference to the required reading from the course.  You may do internal references in this section:  blah blah blah (Gallagher and Waugh, p. ?) or blah blah blah (Faust, p. ?) to make reference to required reading.  In Part One, you  do not have to do Chicago Manual of Style notes, but you must include references within this section.

July 1, 1863 was the day the Battle of Gettysburg began. It lasted three days. It had the highest number of casualties of any Civil War battle, numbering over 50,000 dead. General Robert E. Lee of the Confederacy lost the battle and dashed Confederate hopes that the war could be won by invading the North.

A.        Compare and contrast the resources and evidence base for two of the required readings for the course: 
1)         Philip Paludan’s Victims: A True Story of the Civil War
2)         Jim Down’s Sick From Freedom: African-American Illness and Suffering During the Civil War and Reconstruction.
Be very specific in your analysis and use evidence from both books, with footnotes which conform to Chicago Manual of Style. This is not a contest between these two works, but demonstrates your ability to draw on the required reading and make assessments of secondary sources.

A.      The impact of the Civil War on soldiers and civilians, politicians and statesmen has been examined in detail. How and in what way can we document and explore the changes brought for slave and free as well as black and white? The issue of status and race were dramatically transformed during the period 1860-1877. Please discuss and document these changes as reflected in the readings, lectures and/or films required for the course.
