Due to decreased physical functioning, patients might find it hard to actively engage  in social activities which might result in social isolation and contribute to feelings of helplessness and depression. The majority of stroke survivors are helped by family members who help the patient attain activities of daily living. When a diagnosis is forts made, the family is often worried and confused about the life of the patient. Distress is usually followed by feelings of fear, disbelief, shock, and anxiety due to uncertainties about the future.  Caring for a stroke patient is demanding and can take a psychological and physical toll on the family members, leading to burnout (Gawulayo et al., 2021).

The nurse’s role in supporting the patient’s psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs

Patients with stroke experience emotional, psychological, and spiritual disturbances. Oshavandi et al. (2022) posit that the majority of patients experience depression, anxiety, and interpersonal conflicts that have the potential to negative affect the meaning of their life.  These conditions affect patient’s identity, and self-esteem, which lessens their hope of living. Identification of the patient’s spiritual, emotional, and psychological needs could lead to appropriate interventions and strategies.  By identifying and supporting a patient’s spiritual, emotional, and psychological needs, the nurse can help the patient adjust and couple with the disease.
