Incivility at The Healthcare Workplace Essay Assignment Paper
The psychological safety of healthcare employees working in an uncivil setting is at risk due to incivility. Due to the nurses’ anxiety and tension over speaking up, this is dangerous for the patient’s safety and lowers the standard of nursing care provided. The epidemic of workplace disrespect has been addressed with several evidence-based solutions. The working atmosphere of the organization, which was evaluated and received a score of 87 (moderately healthy), is examined in this paper, along with some of these treatments and improvement ideas. Part 1: Work Environment Assessment
On a scale of 20 to 100, Clark’s Healthy Workplace Inventory scored 87. This indicates a generally healthy work environment for me. Members’ high levels of trust, transparent and clear communication, and staff that uphold the organization’s mission and vision are just a few of the factors that received excellent marks. Other aspects that received good marks included treating employees like assets, appreciating employees, and publicly recognizing individual success. Workload distribution received low marks, but employee salary and remuneration obtained an average rating.

The fact that the workplace inventory score matched the organization’s degree of civility was a surprise in the results. I also anticipated that the company would receive top marks for competitive employee pay and remuneration. Treating employees properly and respecting them as vital assets is a concept I held prior to doing the assessment and which was validated. The two places received excellent ratings, which supported my suspicions. The examination yielded a score of 87, which indicates that the workplace is moderately healthy and courteous. To meet the criteria for a healthy department environment, the cleanliness and civility of the workplace can be addressed. Incivility at The Healthcare Workplace Essay Assignment Paper
The article by Clark et al. (2011) on dialogues that can assist organizations in fostering a culture of civility in the workplace by encouraging healthy talks, appreciating coworkers, and assisting in dispute resolution. In this essay from 2014, Griffin and Clark address several methods for managing incivility and how violence affects it. The article by Clark (2015) illustrates how transformative leadership may motivate staff to innovate and adapt to change to benefit an organization’s overall development. At my place of employment, the philosophy of transformative leadership has been crucial in fostering change, establishing a culture of civility, and reducing violence through effective communication. By employing transformational leadership techniques to resolve conflicts and address the assessment’s weak points, such as task distribution and competitive employee compensation, the theories outlined in the articles can be applied to enhance organizational health.
Part 2: Reviewing the Literature on the Interventional Concepts to Curb Workplace Incivility
According to Clark (2015), healthcare staff should learn to speak up when incivility occurs to reduce it in the workplace. This is the most efficient approach to combat this threat, she claims. Along with speaking up, she suggests that all staff members treat their coworkers and pupils with respect. She suggests three evidence-based strategies: (1) reflecting, probing, and committing (questioning oneself before responding to an unfriendly situation), (2) creating a safe zone (ensuring that the environment is secure when confronted by an unfriendly colleague to prevent an escalation), and (3) using the DESC model to structure a friendly exchange of ideas (Clark, 2015). According to Clark (2018), the acronym DESC stands for Describe (what occurred), Explain (how you felt), Share (what you would want to see happen in the future), and Compromise (by committing to the newer way). The proven methods for addressing incivility in the workplace, according to Clark et al. (2011), include (i) holding joint meetings to discuss civility, (ii) having clearly defined standards of conduct, (iii) providing ongoing training for staff on respectful interaction and dispute settlement, and (iv) facilitating positive role modeling by everyone, but especially nurse managers and supervisors.
In Clark (2018), the evidence-based methods for reducing rudeness at work are described as cognitive rehearsal (CR) and simulation (role play). Through coaching from a trained communicator, CR is a behavioral intervention that aims to prepare a healthcare worker, such as a nurse, for a potentially hostile encounter. Additionally, Griffin and Clark (2014) argue that cognitive rehearsal is the best way to deal with rudeness in the healthcare field. Incivility at The Healthcare Workplace Essay Assignment Paper
Applying Concepts to Improve Workplace Environment
As mentioned earlier, the ideas discussed in the articles are relevant to my organization’s evaluation, resulting in a score of only 75. This indicates that there is much opportunity for development and that my work environment is only somewhat healthy. As a result, my organization needs these ideas to grow. Therefore, the hospital could implement these theories by permitting open communication (such as a nurse feeling safe to report rude behavior right away with no fear that nothing will be done), incorporating the DESC model during conflict resolution training and education, creating a code of conduct and clear policy guidelines governing workplace behavior, and including cognitive rehearsal in ongoing instruction for employees.
Part 3: Recommendation of Evidence-Based Strategies
The use of cognitive rehearsal (Clark, 2018; Griffin & Clark, 2014) and the use of the DESC model to facilitate civil conversations (Clark, 2018; Clark, 2015) are two strategies that are supported by the evidence-based literature above, and that can be used to help the assessed organization improve. The tactics of (1) reflecting, exploring, and committing (Clark, 2015); and (2) simulation or role-play (Clark, 2018) can also be used to strengthen successful behaviors. According to Chafetz et al. (2020), these would be useful in any healthcare work environment. Not only will these strategies assist the shortcomings, but they will bolster practices already addressed. Conclusion
In the healthcare industry, there are numerous environmental issues at work. The majority of these issues need solutions that can only be practical after thorough, in-depth analysis. Different assessment methods are employed for this. Employees in the healthcare industry who operate in an uncivil environment run the danger of psychological harm. This is risky for the patient’s safety and decreases the level of nursing care offered because the nurses are afraid and tense about speaking up. As this paper demonstrates, many evidence-based methods have been used to combat the epidemic of workplace disrespect.
