International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health Discussion
Research methodologies refer to the practical aspect or how the research is undertaken. In other words, it relates to how the researcher systematically designs a study to ensure valid and reliable results and data while addressing his set goals, aims, and objectives. Hospital-acquired infections have been a major issue linked to diminishing quality of care within hospitals and other care delivery settings. Over the years, there has been an increasing demand for patient-based and quality care, which has focused on addressing the multiple diverse issues dragging patients to spend more and stay more within healthcare facilities. This paper aims to research the methodologies used in researching diverse practices to address Healthcare Acquired Infections (HAIs). While different measures or healthcare-based practices have been adopted to address the issue, Dagne et al. (2019) identified that hand hygiene is increasingly being adopted and advocated as an evidence-based practice to address the HAIs menace. Complying with hand hygiene practice is an important practice and measure in preventing infections in patients within healthcare settings. The safety and wellness of patients and care providers have become critical indicators of an effective and top-performing healthcare facility. Why you chose this article and how it relates to the clinical issue of interest (include a brief explanation of the ethics of research related to your clinical issue of interest) | I selected this article due to its identification of Hand Hygiene as a measure to address HAIs which is my primary clinical issue. The article also establishes the link between hand hygiene practice and HAI.
Being an observational study, the research takes time to undertake the observations ethically. |
The article uses a case study approach, addresses my identified clinical issue, and not-so-old publications serve my research.
On the other hand, the article provides a link between infectious diseases and personal hygiene, establishing hand washing as a recognized intervention in reducing the identified issue of HAI International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health Discussion |
The peer-reviewed article, published in 2020, directly addresses my selected clinical issue. The article also addresses the adoption of hand hygiene in the home care setting as a solution to address poor hygiene and relates infections | Not only does the article relate to my research topic or clinical issue, but it also focuses on establishing challenges and or opportunities concerning implementing hand hygiene interventions |
Brief description of the aims of the research of each peer-reviewed article | The research’s primary aims and objectives are to assess compliance with hand hygiene among healthcare workers and the relationship with HAI among patients | To address infectious diseases in a healthcare setting that is a result of poor personal hygiene
To assess hand washing practice as an intervention among mothers with under five years children in debark town |
To describe hand hygiene among nurses working in home care seeking
Assess factors associated with hand hygiene concerning home care visits |
To describe hand hygiene facilities and behavior at hospitals in rural Liberia.
To characterize barriers to hand hygiene practices in Liberian healthcare settings To evaluate opportunities and hospital readiness for interventions to improve hand hygiene. |
Brief description of the research methodology used Be sure to identify if the methodology used was qualitative, quantitative, or a mixed-methods approach. Be specific. | The research utilizes an observational research approach, which is a qualitative method as the data is collected from an observation being made by the researcher | The study utilizes a cross-sectional study approach which is a quantitative and a type of observational study design.
An analytical cross-sectional study is a type of quantitative, non-experimental research design |
The research utilizes an Observational study of nurse hand hygiene practices. This is, in turn, a qualitative study method. | The article utilized a mixed-method study design
The mixed-methods approach allowed for a qualitative investigation of the facilitators and obstacles to hand hygiene at each institution and standardization of the infrastructure and supplies for hand hygiene across all research locations. |
A brief description of the strengths of each research methodology used, including the reliability and validity of how the methodology was applied in each of the peer-reviewed articles you selected. | The utilization of an observational approach or study design provides critical, descriptive information and data and long-term safety and efficacy, which cannot be obtained in clinical trials
It is also less expensive compared to clinical trials |
The utilization of a cross-sectional study design presents a quick-to-execute and cheaper research design compared to others | The observer can take data when the target population is not aware, safe and easy to implement, with higher or greater accuracy and a simple method to execute
|
Enables the researcher to factor in both qualitative and quantitative data collected.
It can also give more granular results |
General Notes/Comments | The article is a case study and provides a rich source for my research. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health Discussion
The rich link between HH and HAIs provides a positive remedy to my identified clinical issue hence as a strong foundation for extended research |
The research article will be an important source for my research. Its focus on hand washing as a solution to infectious diseases aligns with my focus on the HAIs issue. | The article will be critical to my research in establishing an evidence-based practice to address HAIs | The article will be a useful source for my topic. Not only does it relate to the identified clinical issue, but also challenges and opportunities to improve the solution to hand hygiene. |
