Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is a project management model/tool designed to offer a structured approach in guiding the project management process from inception to completion. A nurse informaticist plays an important role in each of the five stages of the SDLC, with their role extending from offering ideas to presenting details on the problem scope that the project is intended to address. The role undertaken by a nurse informaticist within the SDLC model is intended to ensure that the project achieves the intended outcomes within the set timetable and using the allocated resources to include the technology and personnel resources. Discussion
Planning and requirements definition
This first step of the SDLC focuses on offering direction to the whole project while keeping the subsequent steps in mind. It ensures that everything affecting the subsequent steps is well managed (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). At this step, nurses at the graduate level have the role of collaborating with other stakeholders to explore the parameters of the project. This includes defining the problem scope, identifying and exploring potential solutions, presenting information on potential solutions, identifying and assimilating the resources required for the project, and determining a timeline for solving as perceived through the identified potential solutions (Risling, T. & Risling, D., 2020). In undertaking these roles, the nurse at the graduate level makes use of critical thinking and knowledge about clinical workflows and processes in identifying the root cause of the problem, setting realistic expectations for the solution, establishing goals, and identifying objectives. Analysis
This second step of the SDLC focuses on prioritizing the change project requirements, generating and evaluating possible alternative systems and solutions, and making recommendations about the features that the appropriate solution/system should have. Failure to address any of the tasks associated with this step would result in the solution being unable to meet the needs of the users and organization, and cause project delays, data losses, errors, and communication breakdown (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). Design of the new system
This third step of the SDLC focuses on ensuring that the solution/system is properly configured. This looks at the system architecture, user interface and operation to include hardware, software, networking, data retrieval and archiving processes (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). Nurses at the graduate level play an important role in reinforcing the primary purpose of the system and ensuring that peripheral issues are addressed, and not overlooked, such as patient and providers safety. The nurses are engaged in customizing the system to ensure that it addresses and accommodates the practice needs of the different specialties and departments (Wang et al., 2019). Implementation
This fourth step of the SDLC focuses on installing, testing and customizing the system (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). Nurses at the graduate level play an important role in presenting a training plan for nurses and other staff members to use the system. In addition, they present a plan for maintaining the system, evaluating the outcomes and improving the system. In addition, these nurses ensure that nursing staff can communicate with the system management team as they solicit and deliver performance details applied in system redesign to improve outcomes. They provide feedback applied in ensuring that the system is customized, optimized and adaptive. Besides that, they identify any workflow and system issues that nurses experience, and implement targeted improvements to address these issues (Garcia-Dia, 2019).
Post-implementation support
This fifth step of the SDLC focuses on ensuring that the system continues to function at optimized and efficient levels (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). Nurses at the graduate level play a role in ensuring that users continue to receive adequate training and that there is continued support. They ensure that the users have a good understanding of the system, its effects and implications, as well as continued system acceptance and compliance. In addition, they help in ensuring that the system adheres to best practices and achieves increased satisfaction levels. One must accept that nurses at the graduate level are valuable members of the implementation team. They play critical roles in ensuring that the SDLC objectives are met through the five steps. In addition, one must acknowledge that these nurses play a unique role in synthesizing knowledge about the system and enhancing the quality of care. It is imperative that their knowledge and position be leveraged to ensure that they fulfil their roles and create effective and efficient systems that have a positive impact on health care delivery.
