Mind Map: APN and ANP

Advanced practice nursing (APN) and advanced nursing practice (ANP) are two distinct nursing qualifications. In fact, they are resultant of nursing education that has evolved from information training to formal training, certification and licensure. Nursing education has evolved to include Master’s and PhD levels of education. In this case, an ANP is a practicing caregiver trained to provide care in a medical role, such as geriatric caregiver, pediatric nurse, family nurse consultant, and adult nurse practitioner. ANP act as clinical leaders and have the freedom and authority to act autonomously in assessing, diagnosing and treating patients with multidimensional problems. They have the authority to refer, admit and discharge patients within their clinical areas of expertise (Murray, 2022). Nursing Leadership and Management for Patient Safety and Quality Care Essay

Similar to an ANP, an APN requires at least post graduate level of education that could be a Master’s or a PhD. That is because APN are equipped with superior instructive and medical knowledge, scope of operation, and proficiencies. An APN has expanded tasks in management of individuals and groups. APN have the role of treating and diagnosing illnesses, advising the public on health issues, managing chronic diseases, and engaging in continuous education to remain ahead of developments in the medical filed to include methodological and technological developments (Hall & Roussel, 2022).

The current professional identification of APN and ANP is unnecessary. That is because they both have post-graduate level of education and enabled to diagnose and treat patients’ diseases in approaches that were previously limited to physicians. Both the APN and ANP are excellently prepared nurses who are critical to the current health care environment as they generate processes, improve policies and tackle complex problems (Zaccagnini & Pechacek, 2019).

APN has its roots back in the 1890s, although ANP has a more recent history in the 1960s as a response to unmet health care needs of populations in rural areas. At its inception, APN focused on utilizing medical model of care to assess, diagnose and treat (Shalowitz, 2019).  Nursing Leadership and Management for Patient Safety and Quality Care Essay

There are four main types of APN roles: clinical nurse specialists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, certified nurse practitioners, and certified nurse midwives. Each of the four roles require at least a Master’s degree in addition to appropriate licensing and certification. APNs have many clinical hours of nursing experience prior to starting the graduate school program. They are trained and educated on specific core competencies with the learning domains including leadership, professionalism, health care technologies, informatics, system-based practice, interprofessional practice, safety, quality, scholarship for nursing discipline, population health, person-centered care, and knowledge of practice (Zaccagnini & Pechacek, 2019).

APNs play a critical role in providing health care access to the public, specially among underserved populations and those in rural areas. They are trained and educated to provide health care utilizing evidence-based practice that guides them in standardizing patient care and ensuring high quality care at a minimum cost. In addition, they enjoy autonomy and professional parameters in providing health care to patients. They apply their skills and knowledge in nursing to provide holistic care plans to patients and families with emphasis on preventing diseases (DeNisco & Beauvais, 2020). APNs have higher education and advanced training. They allows them to enjoy autonomy that reflects towards providing medical care to the extent of their training. They are authorized and licensed to evaluate patients, diagnose patient problems, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and initiate and manage treatments to include prescribing controlled substances and other medication under the state board of nursing’s licensing authority (Zerwekh & Garneau, 2022).

A MIND MAP is a non-linear representation of how you connect ideas and concepts. Mind maps are useful for creative thinking, brainstorming, and organizing your understanding of a topic. All maps have some things in common. They have a natural organizational structure that radiates from the center and use lines, symbols, words, colors, and images according to simple, brain-friendly concepts. Mind mapping converts a long list of information into a colorful, memorable, and highly organized diagram that works in line with your brain’s natural way of doing things. They illustrate associations between ideas or topics that radiate from a central theme, topic, or concept. Step 1: Start in the middle of a blank page, writing or drawing the idea you intend to develop. I would suggest that you use the page in landscape orientation.

Step 2: Develop the related subtopics around this central topic, connecting each of them to the center with a line.

Step 3: Repeat the same process for the subtopics, generating lower-level subtopics as you see fit, connecting each of those to the corresponding subtopic.

Step 4: Check the chapter to make sure that you include all major terms and concepts. Nursing Leadership and Management for Patient Safety and Quality Care Essay

Use colors, drawings, and symbols copiously. Be as visual as you can, and your brain will thank you. I’ve met many people who don’t even try, with the excuse they’re “not artists”. Don’t let that keep you from trying it out!
Keep the topic labels as short as possible, keeping them to a single word – or, better yet, to only a picture. Especially in your first mind map, the temptation to write a complete phrase is enormous, but always look for opportunities to shorten it to a single word or figure – your mind map will be much more effective that way.
Vary text size, color, and alignment. Vary the thickness and length of the lines. Provide as many visual cues as you can to emphasize important points. Every little bit helps engage your brain.
Feel free to check the internet and review other Mind Maps for inspiration but make sure that your mind map is your own, unique work. Each mind map MUST be unique and reflect your thinking. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
Here are some free tools to create Mind Maps. You can also use PowerPoint or Word. If you have clear handwriting and are creative, you can do it manually, snap a picture and upload it. Nursing Leadership and Management for Patient Safety and Quality Care Essay
