Patient Preferences and Decision Making Assignment
Patient preferences are recognized as individual-based choices based on their decisions regarding medical options and are founded on values, beliefs, and experiences. According to Swift et al. (2021), access to information by patients has resulted in being more informed regarding their health. This trend has led to more patients getting involved in determining their best-suited care practice. Siminoff (2019) identified that, for practical and positive care outcomes, involving patients in decision-making concerning their health improves health outcomes. To effectively and collaborative include patients in decision-making, patient decision aids have become indispensable. These tools help people or patients get informed and involved in decision-making by providing details or options available and related or expended outcomes from a given choice. These tools are adopted to complement input from a healthcare worker. Patient Preferences and Decision Making Assignment

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, is recognized as a developmental disability caused by differences in the child’s brain. According to Swift et al. (2021), children diagnosed with the disorder often have social communication and interaction-related issues, sometimes denoted by repetitive or restricted behaviors. Children with autism challenge the parent and caretakers, hence the need for an integrated model to determine when to adopt which treatment model. Treatment of autism can adopt diverse practices, but the major challenge is deciding when to take medication for challenging behavior or using an alternative approach.
The selected decision aid is the ‘autism; should my child take medicine for challenging behavior’? This decision aid is both set for parents and guardians of children diagnosed with autism and also have challenging behavior (Patient Decision Aids – Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, 2020). The decision aid advocated for treating the problem behaviors with medications n medication. Still, alternative methods are adopted to improve the behavior, finally treating the behavior issues with a combination of medicine and other methods. The autism decision aid provides a detailed understanding of the disorder as well as helps in determining when to seek medical treatment for the disorder. The decision gives the parent thorough education regarding understanding the disorder and diverse care practices which can be critical in helping improve the overall quality of patient life. Social determinants of health can be regarded as the outside elements, such as the environment, that indirectly impact a person’s health. These diseases affect an individual’s health and quality of life. As in the case of increased wealth and economic stability, which are connected to better healthcare, these characteristics can result in healthcare disparities and significantly impact clinical results and treatment regimens. Inadequate healthcare might also be associated with low levels of education (Eddy Lang et al., 2018). Patient values, essentially individual traits like gender, color, and ethnicity and, can significantly impact clinical treatment plans, are another essential variable that might affect treatment plans. Patient values assist the medical team in making better planning and related choices.
As a healthcare professional, the selected decision aid plays a critical role in determining, understanding, and advocating for the best care practices for the patients identified with autism. In addition to being used as a support tool, the decision aid defines action and evidence-based care practices that can be utilized to address the condition concerning patient or parent preferences ( Melnyk et al., 2018). Finally, the tool would be used as a support for patient education, which would be critical in empowering and providing patients with evidence-based measures to address autism.
