The course enhanced my understanding of the selected topic, osteomyelitis. I learned that osteomyelitis is swelling or inflammation of bone tissue, which usually leads to infections. Bone infection is common in different patient populations, including children and adults, and it is attributed to various causative agents, including bacteria and fungi. Symptoms of osteomyelitis include pain and redness in the affected bone, swelling, weakness, and fever (Huang et al., 2019)
This topic relates to clinical manifestations that might be presented in clinical practice. Upon visiting the clinic, individuals with osteomyelitis will report pain and redness in a specific bone and general weakness. Additionally, high temperature, indicating fever, will be detected during physical examination. Therefore, knowledge of osteomyelitis acquired in this course will enable me to appropriately diagnose this condition in patients presented to the clinic with symptoms related to osteomyelitis. The idea that makes sense is that osteomyelitis is primarily characterized by swelling or inflammation of bone tissue. Most cases of osteomyelitis are caused by a bacteria known as Staphylococcus aureus. The presence of this bacteria in the affected bone causes inflammatory markers to rise, resulting in swelling and inflammation, which primarily characterize osteomyelitis.
This topic relates to current events such as disease outbreaks. The risk of osteomyelitis is relatively high among individuals with other chronic illnesses, including diabetes type 2 Mellitus, Sickle cell disease, HIV or AIDS, and Rheumatoid arthritis (Maravelas et al., 2020). Similarly, people with other conditions, specifically HIV/AIDs, are at a high risk of contracting infections and diseases in the event of outbreaks due to weak immune systems.
Osteomyelitis is more treatable than other bone disorders since the infected or dead part of the bone can be removed through surgery. Additionally, the patient is administered intravenous antibiotics to destroy the remaining bacteria. Presentation Reflection and Analysis Discussion Paper
