Family-centered care improves patient outcomes and patient satisfaction (Palka et al., 2022). While analyzing the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit’s (PICU) fiscal year 2020 to 2022’s Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) score, an identified opportunity for improving meaningful family-centered care initiatives emerged. During the fiscal year 2020, HCAHPS scores triumphed with top box scores in the 80th percentile for nurses and doctors; listen/kept parent informed/preventing mistakes. During this time, the PICU had well-established Family Centered Rounds. By the fiscal year 2022, the scores plummeted into the 30th percentile in the same top box scores. Family-Centered Rounds were placed on hold due to the risk of exposure to COVID-19. In order to reestablish pre-COVID era patient satisfaction scores, a comprehensive communication plan and care plan that incorporates patients and families has become a high priority. This report aims to outline a practicum student’s professional development objectives in the context of reestablishing family-centered rounds in the PICU. These objectives include developing a family-centered communication plan, collaborating with the healthcare team to create patient-centered care plans, and evaluating the program’s effectiveness. Professional Practicum Plan Objectives

Literature Review, Methodology, Methods, and Theories
Initially, a plan that promotes and supports effective communication between the healthcare team, patients, and families during family-centered rounds will be developed. Effective communication is critical in improving the patient experience and ensuring that patients and families feel informed and involved in the care process. Notably, the objective of improving communication in healthcare is reflective of the application level of Bloom’s Taxonomy because it requires healthcare professionals to apply their knowledge and skills in a practical setting to improve communication (Pikhart & Klimova, 2019). A close analysis reveals that this objective involves using effective communication strategies to guarantee that patients and families are informed and involved in their care leading to better health outcomes and improved patient satisfaction. To achieve this objective, healthcare professionals must apply their knowledge of communication techniques and adapt them to individual patient needs and preferences. To realize this objective a needs assessment will be conducted to identify communication barriers in the pediatric intensive care unit. Then work will begin with other members of the healthcare team to address these communication barriers. The plan will include guidelines for effective communication during family-centered rounds, for example, using plain language, involving patients and families in decision-making, and providing regular updates on the patient’s condition (Roussel, 2022). In addition, training materials and conduct training sessions for the healthcare team will be developed to ensure that they are equipped with the necessary skills to implement this protocol. Evaluation of the success of this objective will be in completing the training materials and conducting training sessions.
The second objective prioritizes patient and family preferences and values while developing care plans. Setyowati, Susanto, and Munir (2022) have argued that using this approach would lead to patients and families being at the center of the care process. Once this happens, their experiences will improve, and they will feel appreciated and respected. The second SMART objective reflects the analysis level of Bloom’s Taxonomy as it involves breaking down complex information and synthesizing it to create a comprehensive care plan tailored to meet families’ unique needs (Valenzuela, 2018). The objective requires healthcare professionals to critically analyze patient and family input and integrate it into developing a care plan that considers all aspects of their health and well-being. For this objective to be achieved, collaboration with the patient and family advisory council will be vital in producing care plans unique to the patient’s needs and preferences. The third SMART objective will be to obtain senior leadership approval of the family-centered care protocol. Approval of the protocol will be the final step required for the near future implementation of this initiative. This objective will be measured by the protocol, either being approved or not.
Incorporating Jean Watson’s theory of caring into developing patient-centered rounds can enhance the patient experience and promote better health outcomes. The theory emphasizes the importance of caring for patients holistically, not just treating their physical symptoms. This aligns well with the goal of patient-centered rounds, which aim to involve patients and families in decision-making and create a supportive environment for healing. One way to apply Watson’s theory in developing patient-centered rounds is through 1:1 direct report rounds. These rounds involve meeting with patients individually to discuss their care plan, areas of focus, and ways to increase their perception of being cared for (Alharbi & Baker, 2020). The direct report rounds allow healthcare providers to personalize care to patients’ unique needs, incorporating their values, preferences, and expectations into the care plan.
Providers will be educated on the appropriate use of techniques that can be used to enhance the patient’s perception of being cared for. For example, touch can be used to convey empathy and support, such as holding the patient’s hand or placing a hand on their shoulder. Active listening techniques demonstrate genuine concern, such as maintaining eye contact, staying present and focused without interrupting, and repeating what the patient/parent has said. In addition to incorporating Watson’s theory into the direct report rounds, providers can also use the theory to guide the development of the communication plan (Petrovskaya, 2022). The communication plan should prioritize empathy and compassion, recognizing that patients and families may be experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety during their hospitalization. The plan should also create a supportive environment that values the patient’s input and promotes joint decision-making.
Gunawan et al. (2022) have written that by incorporating Watson’s theory into patient-centered rounds, healthcare providers can create a more compassionate and supportive environment that promotes healing and enhances the patient experience. The direct report rounds provide an opportunity to personalize care and demonstrate empathy and support. At the same time, the communication plan can ensure that patients and families feel valued and heard throughout their hospitalization. Resources
All projects require the input of various forms of resources for them to succeed. Drawing from this, my practicum project will, in particular, require the input of three classes; human, physical, and technical resources. Key human resources include the project manager, who will run and manage the entire project, the project team members, a supervisor, and various stakeholders. Independently, all these will be required to guarantee that the practicum project runs smoothly. On physical resources, specific items will include office space, computers, and project management software. All these items are essential to help promote effective communication and coordination among team members. Lastly, technical resources will be required, and critical items under this are specialized equipment, tools, and software required to develop the project’s deliverables. Human resources will be helpful to ensure that the project is managed efficiently. On the other hand, the physical and technical resources will enable the team to work effectively and produce quality results. A Formative and Summative Evaluation
The success of this practicum project will only be guaranteed if an appropriate evaluation is in place. Following this, my project will be evaluated on both formative and summative approaches to evaluation. The success of projects requires much scrutiny to be conducted, and applying these two evaluation methods ensures that the set objectives for the project are realized. On the one hand, the formative evaluation will be conducted early during the development phase. This form of evaluation will provide necessary feedback on progress and help pick out any areas that probably require improvement. The second approach, the summative evaluations, will be carried out once the project is completed. The purpose of this form of evaluation will be to assess the general project’s effectiveness. The two evaluations are intended to measure various aspects of the project, including timelines, project management, communications within the team, and the quality of deliverables produced. What is more, the results of these evaluations will be used to determine if the project will carry on as planned and to help identify areas that require improvement. Ultimately, the information gained from the evaluations will inform project decision-making and improve future projects.
Conclusion
In the final analysis, developing a family-centered care rounds protocol incorporating patient and family preferences and values will positively influence patient outcomes and satisfaction. See Appendix A for the timeline set forth.
