Role As a Nurse Leader in Assuring Policies Assignment
Discussion
- What would you do as a nurse leader if your policy or procedure conflicts with the most recent evidence? Describe your response to this nurse.
Hospital-level policy for healthcare delivery gives a framework for providing quality care and ensuring patient safety. Nurse leaders have a role in policy-making, including keeping them updated (Haskins & Roets, 2022). If a nurse reports an incident where a policy differs from the most recent evidence, as a nurse leader, I would consult the director of nursing about the best approach to the problem. I would acknowledge the nurse for highlighting the issue and request them to wait as I brainstorm a safe intervention to continue patient care. I would also examine the updated procedures to determine how they apply to the patient’s case. Furthermore, I would plan for evaluation to assess if the current policy has other outdated procedures. I would communicate my findings to the director and lead the nursing staff in implementing new evidence-based patient care procedures. Role As a Nurse Leader in Assuring Policies Assignment

- Why is it important to update policies and procedures? What are the risks if they are outdated?
Hospital policies and procedures guide daily nursing practice. Nurses are obligated to adhere to the policies and procedures. They standardize practice, preventing medical errors. Updating hospital-level policies and guidelines is essential in ensuring quality and satisfying care. Outdated policies may increase the risk of committing medical errors, which can threaten patient safety and attract costs for treatment and litigation. Regular hospital policy reviews can identify gaps and procedures that require updating. It is recommended to update the policies annually because, in today’s dynamic healthcare landscape, new regulations and evidence are bound to emerge (Haskins & Roets, 2022).
- What is your role as a nurse leader in assuring policies or procedures are up to date?
Nurse leadership is crucial in defining and updating care policies and procedures. The nurse leader informs the senior management, including the director of nursing, about organizational policies as frontline workers in healthcare. They are also involved in identifying practice changes and advocating for their inclusion in the local practice policies. Also, the nurse leaders gather feedback from the nurses on best practices drawn from the evidence-based inquiry. Besides, as a participant in policy-making, they review and update policies (Beauchemin et al., 2019). As a nurse leader, I would evaluate the hospital policies regularly. I would also engage the staff to identify practice gaps and new evidence. Lastly, I would inform the nurses about the changes and provide training as required. Step 1: Read the following case study:
A nurse has an order to complete a procedure on a patient. After reading the procedure, the nurse notices that it is not best practice and it has not been updated for 6 years. The nurse takes this issue to the nurse leader (charge nurse) and the nurse manager (unit manager).
