Theoretical/Conceptual Framework

Patient follow-up care is an essential part of the treatment for many psychiatric patients. However, its effectiveness is still an open question. My research question seeks to address whether patient follow-up, compared to no follow-up, improves symptoms and promotes recovery in psychiatric patients within one year after initiating treatment. Theories to be Applied, the Process and Logics for Selection and Application to the Project

The two theories that will be used to inform the study above are the Social Learning Theory and the Health Belief Model. The process of selecting these theoretical frameworks involved a thorough literature review related to the research problem, identifying theories or models used in similar studies, and evaluating their relevance and appropriateness for my study. The Social Learning Theory and Health Belief Model were selected based on their ability to explain health-related behaviors and their influencing factors.

The Social Learning Theory emphasizes the role of observation and modeling in acquiring new behaviors (Mcleod, 2023). According to this theory, individuals learn by observing others, which can occur through direct observation or media sources. In the context of the study, the Social Learning Theory can be used to explain how individuals learn about healthy behaviors and how these behaviors are reinforced or discouraged in their social environment to facilitate follow-up care. According to Karl et al. (2022), the Health Belief Model is a cognitive model that explains why individuals engage in health behaviors. This model assumes that an individual’s behavior is determined by their beliefs and attitudes towards the behavior. The framework guiding the study is the Integrative Model of Behavior Prediction (IMBP). The IMBP is a comprehensive framework that combines elements of several behavior theories, including the Social Learning Theory and the Health Belief Model. The IMBP framework assumes that various factors influence behavior, including individual characteristics, social environment, and cognitive processes (Rajati et al., 2019). The key components of the IMBP framework include individual factors, social environment, cognitive processes, behavior, and outcomes. Individual factors refer to characteristics such as age, gender, and personality that may influence behavior. The social environment includes factors such as family, friends, and community that may influence behavior. Cognitive processes include the mental processes involved in decision-making and behavior, such as beliefs and attitudes. Behavior refers to the actual behavior being studied, such as physical activity or healthy eating. Applications of the Elements to the Study

Each element of the phenomenon can be applied to the IMBP framework. The individual factors to be considered include age, gender, psychiatric diagnosis, and length of hospital stay. The social environment will be examined by looking at factors such as family support, social support, and access to resources. The cognitive processes to be examined include beliefs about the effectiveness of follow-up care and attitudes toward follow-up care. The behavior to be studied is the use of follow-up care, and the outcomes to be examined are symptoms and recovery. The framework will examine how individual factors, social environment, and cognitive processes influence behavior and outcomes. The results of the study will provide insight into the effectiveness of follow-up care for psychiatric patients and inform evidence-based practice. The rationale for the Sample Selection Criteria

The sample selection criteria will be based on the IMBP framework. The sample will include individuals who have recently been discharged from an acute inpatient psychiatric treatment facility and who have been diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder. The sample will be stratified by age, gender, and length of hospital stay to ensure that the sample is representative of the population of individuals receiving psychiatric treatment. The sample will also be stratified by socio-economic status to ensure that the sample is representative of the population regarding access to resources. The subjects will be grouped into individuals currently using follow-up services and those not using follow-up services. This will allow for comparing the two groups regarding symptoms and recovery. In addition, selection will be based on the availability of follow-up services in the area to ensure that the sample is representative of the population in terms of access to follow-up care.

Research that Used the Framework

This article by Lin et al. (2020) explores the potential of using an integrated social cognition model to predict Covid-19 preventive behaviors in adolescents. The authors utilized the Integrative Model of Behavior Prediction (IMBP), developed to explain how individuals make decisions in social contexts. In the study, the authors used an online survey to collect data from 674 adolescents in Iran. The results showed that all three components of the IMBP were significantly associated with Covid-19 preventive behaviors. Specifically, self-efficacy and behavioral capability strongly influenced preventive behaviors, followed by motivation. The authors also found significant differences in the effect of the IMBP components on Covid-19 preventive behaviors across gender and age groups. Specifically, they found that self-efficacy and behavioral capability were more influential in predicting preventive behaviors among adolescent girls, while motivation was more influential in predicting preventive behaviors among adolescent boys. The study provides important insights into the role of the IMBP in predicting Covid-19 preventive behaviors in adolescents. It demonstrates the potential of using the IMBP to understand better and predict health behaviors.

Another research by Benita et al. (2019) is a great example of how the Integrative Model of Behavior Prediction can be used to understand better the effects of different types of emotion regulation on well-being. The authors tested their hypothesis that integrative and suppressive emotion regulation would differentially predict well-being through basic need satisfaction and frustration in Israel, Peru, and Brazil. Data were collected from 224 adults in Israel, 304 in Peru, and 203 in Brazil. The study’s results revealed that integrative emotion regulation was positively associated with well-being in all three countries, while suppressive emotion regulation was not. This finding was consistent with previous research and suggested that integrative emotion regulation may be more effective in promoting well-being than suppressive emotion regulation. The authors offer several possible explanations for why integrative emotion regulation positively affected well-being in all three countries. One possible explanation is that integrative emotion regulation is associated with higher levels of basic need satisfaction, which may lead to increased well-being. Another possible explanation is that integrative emotion regulation is associated with lower frustration levels, which may also lead to increased well-being. Conclusion

The Theoretical/Conceptual Framework

The theoretical framework is a critical element of your work. A theoretical framework is the general representation of relationships in your problem and is based on existingÂ

theory. The conceptual framework is your idea on how the problem should be explored, and it is generally based on a theory. The difference between the two is the scope. Theory is broad; concept is narrow.
In most research studies, your framework can be either theoretical or conceptual in nature. For the purposes of this project, you will most likely follow a conceptual framework, which is your idea on how the research problem will be explored (although you could have both).
