Nurse competencies are widely used at communal levels by nurses towards delivering quality healthcare services. Nurses are therefore able to apply these competencies at any healthcare setting. Through nursing competencies, nurses are able to adjust their attitude towards the different patient encounters, thus improving the quality of healthcare services delivered. The aim of this paper is look at the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) core competencies that cut across all nurse practitioners regardless of their areas of practice.   1. Scientific Foundations

This is a competency that focuses on the scientific educational background of a nurse practitioner. It ensures that every graduating nurse practitioner has an educational background characterized with medical sciences. Depending on the individual’s areas of interest, it is mandatory for a practitioner student to take pharmacology and pathophysiology (Chan et al., 2020). It is also a competency that is essential towards ensuring that nurse practitioner students are able to apply the guidelines of evidence-based practice, research translation and treatment of vulnerable diseases among populations.   1. Leadership

It is a competency that prepares nurse practitioner students towards taking leadership roles in future when working as a team of healthcare providers. The main focus of this competency is professional scholarship and advocacy for nurse practitioner students. The competence is also concerned with communication skills and cultural diversity, since it involves leading a group of people (Waryold et al., 2021). Through this competency, I would incorporate qualities such as good communication skills, problem solving skills and decision-making skills towards creating health promotion programs that improve the quality of life at community level.

  1. Quality

The main focus of quality as a competence is looking the extent at which healthcare services improve patient outcomes towards the desired degree based on the professional standards and knowledge of the nurse practitioner. To help minimize medical errors and multiple harms to patients, nurses are expected to utilize the knowledge, skills and guidelines offered at their respective areas of profession during delivery of healthcare services (Chan et al., 2020). Quality competence assesses the understanding of accessing and using information from databases as well as the understanding of a nurse towards thinking critically when evaluating research findings.   1. Practice Inquiry

The main focus of this competency is research translation. It assesses whether a nurse practitioner is able to apply theoretical knowledge gained towards interpreting research works and applying them at a clinical setting to improve patient outcomes (Waryold et al., 2021). I would socially apply this at community level towards doing various research on the various health problems that impact diseases.

  1. Technology and Information Literacy

It is a competency that ensures that nurse practitioners are able to utilize the available technology resources towards healthcare delivery. Nurse practitioners are expected to use the different forms of technology such as communication tools and network access towards maximizing patient safety. Utilizing these tools are essential towards quality decision making as well as motivating the patients and nurses towards making positive changes (Chan et al., 2020). Policy is a term that describes the rules that govern healthcare resources allocation either at organizational, local, state, national or at international levels. It is an essential competence as it enables nurses to influence legislation towards improving social and health problems affecting people in the society (Chan et al., 2020). For instance, nurses may influence legislation with an aim of reducing health insurance premiums or poverty in the society which are some of the issues affecting most people. At community level, I would apply the competency as an advocacy technique towards improving the social and health lifestyles of people.

  1. Health Delivery System

It is a competence that involves the planning, developing and implementing health programs at public and community levels. It is useful as nurses utilize it towards making reforms concerning decision making at organizational levels. It is also essential as nurse practitioners are able to apply culturally competent care and doing analysis of healthcare program system and its impact to healthcare stakeholders (Waryold et al., 2021). Nurse practitioners are also motivated to critically think towards the organization structure as well as resource allocation. I can utilize the healthcare delivery system at community level through designing and implementation of healthcare programs that positively impact the members of the community.   1. Ethics

It is a competence that focuses on the understanding of a nurse practitioner’s ethical standards when faced by a dilemma during a nurse-patient conversation. Through ethics nurses are able to analyze all the decisions, their impacts and the resulting complexities that might occur as a result of these decisions (Chan et al., 2020). Ethical skills allow nurse practitioners to comfortably handle community dilemmas concerning health problems without delaying. Through informed decisions and guidelines of ethics, nurse practitioners are also able to provide quality care to their patients.

  1. Independent Practice

It is a competence that ensures nurse practitioners work independently in various areas such as diagnosing, prescribing and patient assessment after meeting the required qualifications (Thomas et al., 2017). It does so by ensuring that a nurse practitioner acquires a license as stipulated by the law, and works independently without any form of supervision from physicians (Anthamatten et al., 2020). As a result, a nurse practitioner is able to express their profession and expertise to both diagnosed and undiagnosed patients independently. Nurses should always strive to use critical thinking skills to independently offer quality healthcare services at community level since some challenges do not require medical intervention. To facilitate the safety and improved patient outcomes, nurse practitioners ought to understand their patient needs first, then offer a culturally competent and accepted care. The nurse practitioner Association of Maryland has for a long time been involved in successful legislation activities that improve the working environment of nursing practice. There are various bills and activities that the association has successfully advocated for to improve clinical practice environment. The one common legislation is the nurse practitioner full practice authority Act of 2015 SB 723/ HB 999 (Anthamatten et al., 2020).
