THIS IS THE ASSIGNMENT. BELOW IT I  PUT ASSIGNMENT 2 INSTRUCTIONS.
Writing assignment 2 requires that you conduct some individual research. Let’s get that out of the way! This means that you need to have already selected your topic. If you have not done that already, do it now! If you need to flip a coin to make a decision, do it!
Directions:
Find an article or study you can use for Writing Assignment 2. Make sure it is useful to your specific topic.
Please submit:
The title of the article. Please make sure to put it in quotation marks and capitalize the first letter of each word. Ex: “Title of Article”
The website/newspaper/magazine that you found it in. Make sure that the first letter of each word is capitalized and the title is italicized. Ex: Title of Newspaper
The name of the author + their credentials (make sure to do a little research! How do you know they’re credible?)
The year/date the article was published
2-3 sentences indicating what the article is about. What’s the main point?
1 useful quotation that you can include in your essay. Make sure it adds to your knowledge/understanding of your topic—avoid any quotes that are too vague/broad/generic.
A couple of sentences explaining why this quote is useful. What will it add to your paper?
THIS IS ASSIGNMENT 2 DUE LATER
Context:
Media bias “employ[s] an elaborate and sophisticated array of techniques that allows reporters and media owners to slant news stories in favor of particular groups or interests,” according to Michael Alliprandi and Simone Isadora Flynn in Media Bias: An Overview. Whether intentional or unintentional, media bias is nearly unavoidable–intrinsic personal biases and limited access to complete facts necessary to report a story in a completely unbiased manner inevitably skew the angle of the story, and how it will be perceived by the readers, viewers, and/or listeners.
Bias in the media also manifests in several different ways and for many reasons. Social media, for example, utilizes algorithms that affect what posts a user sees, causing that user to potentially fall into an “echo chamber,” in which they repeatedly see posts and news stories that simply confirm their current beliefs.
This paper will invite you to use informative-style writing in order to explore media bias on a deeper level.
Prompt:
Choose from one of the following prompts:
Describe 2-3 formsLinks to an external site. of media bias (such as bias by story selection, bias by word choice or tone, etc). Explain them and analyze real-world examples to illustrate these outlets/articles’ use of the type of bias you choose.
Investigate one media outlet (such as Fox, CNN, New York Times, etc) in depth and discuss the way it is biased. What kinds of stories is it reporting on? What is the angle taken? What is left out?
Investigate 2 media sources and compare/contrast the way they exhibit bias. How does a more left-leaning site present news compared to a more right-leaning one?
Discuss how social media affects how people are exposed to news stories.
Investigate in depth one type of bias (partisan, demographic, corporate, “big story,” neutrality). Define and explain it thoroughly, and include and analyze specific, real world examples.
