Read the article Ethical Issues and Vaccines from the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Then make a post (4-5 sentences) answering the following questions. With your new understanding of herd immunity and how vaccines work, how do you think we can balance individual choice with protecting our communities? You can use HPV and/or COVID-19 as examples.
02/24 UPDATE: With the current Measles Outbreak in Florida, do you think we should require Measles vaccines to attend public schools?
Here’s some info about the Measles disease and vaccine to help you inform your thoughts
(copied from the announcement I sent on Saturday):
• There is currently an outbreak of Measles virus in Florida (7 cases in Broward County). There is controversy over recommendations from Florida’s Surgeon General, Dr. Joseph Ladapo, because he did not recommend vaccinations or isolation for unvaccinated children, as is typical with Measles outbreaks. Here’s an article from the NY Times that you can read to start understanding this controversy. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/23/well/family/florida-measles-outbreak-joseph-

Measles is one of the most contagious viruses known. Measles can be mild in many people, but 1 in 5 cases results in hospitalization. Measles can be fatal (1 in 1000 cases results in death), and it can cause long-term neurological damage, especially in very young children. https://www.cdc.gov/measles/about/parents-top4.html
Before Measles vaccines were introduced in the 1960s, Measles caused an estimated 2.6 million deaths worldwide per year. In 2021, that number was only 128,000, and most of the deaths occurred in unvaccinated individuals or children who were too young to be fully vaccinated. https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-
