Learning Outcomes

  • Analyse a wide range of electronic circuits, describe their behaviour, and reach substantiated conclusions using relevant engineering principles and terminology.
  • Design, implement and test electronic circuit solutions to given specifications, using appropriate components, CAD tools and hardware.
  • Evaluate and document the performance of electronic system designs, to ensure compliance with the specification.
  • Demonstrate a learner’s progress against achievement of the relevant AHEP4 learning Outcomes as listed in the Module Summary.

Digital Coursework Part – I:

Checklist & Mark Allocations

Report only accepted following valid practical demo. Submit unique evidenced individual summary report of 1000 words with +/- 10%. Students are allowed to include a relevant brief appendix.

(i) via Turnitin, to help check referencing, and (ii) via official submission point.

30% Design Concept and Methodology.
30% Design Implementation.
20% Design Verification & Evaluation.
10% Technical Report.
10% Design Demonstration.

COURSEWORK assessment: Coursework assessment will be consistent with the laboratory and design problem instructions provided during timetabled sessions. Your work needs to clearly summarise evidence of how you have achieved the module learning outcomes. The module learning outcomes are shown in the module guide and the module document. Your work will be assessed using the attached assessment grid.

Digital Coursework Task

Design & Implementation of your student ID number displayed sequentially on the 7-Segment LEDs on the Altera DE10-Lite Board

The aim of this coursework is to show your ability to design and implement a sequential digital circuit using Altera Quartus II software on the DE10-Lite Board. You are expected to:

  • Design the circuit using components from the Quartus digital libraries
  • Show your understanding of your design by producing a report of your work

You are required to submit a report for your referred assignment, together with your design (using the Archive project function in Quartus) via Blackboard. I suggest you include your truth table, Boolean expressions, and circuit schematics in your report.

Please note that this is an individual coursework reassessment.

Analogue Part – II

Checklist & Mark Allocations

Report only accepted following valid practical demo. Submit unique evidenced individual summary report of 1000 words with +/- 10%. Students are allowed to include a relevant brief appendix.

(i) via Turnitin, to help check referencing, and (ii) via official submission point.

/40 The overall system design and performance:

A few design options should have been considered and the rationale for the selection and design of the final circuit should be presented. The report must include a summary sheet for the performance of the complete system and estimated parts cost of the system.

/30 The quality of the evaluation of circuits / coding options, the rationale for the implementation selected and its performance relative to the specification:

Calculation details (equations, values used and results using ideal theory) to justify realistic component selections should be included. Place circuit diagram alongside equations, to define & identify the terms used. The component values must be used both for simulations and for practical labs. OrCAD PSpice simulation examples should be presented to predict the circuit typical performance, using appropriate component models, including uA741 op-amp model or equivalent. Compare theoretical results (predictions) with what happens in practice.

/20 The quality of the submission as a technical report:

The report must include the introduction section, list of contents, theoretical and practical result sections, summary and references (appropriately citing, acknowledging each useful source). Page numbers & ID required on each page, including appendices. All reported results should be with the correct engineering units. Summary report achieved within 1000 words (main body of report). Appendices limited to material which has been referred to from within the report.

/10 The quality of the demonstration:

Evidence of real time preparation and valid practical demonstrations, including each individual result table, with appropriate checks to validate designs.

Overall mark: ___________%

COURSEWORK assessment: Coursework assessment will be consistent with the laboratory and design problem instructions provided during timetabled sessions. Your work needs to clearly summarise evidence of how you have achieved the module learning outcomes. The module learning outcomes are shown in the module guide and the module document. Your work will be assessed using the attached assessment grid.

Analogue Coursework Task

Development of the Digital to Analogue Password-Based Locking System Using Your Last Three Digit Student ID numbers

The aim of this coursework is to develop your skill in designing the analogue circuits via implementation and demonstration the analogue password-based locking system using the sensors, actuators, operational amplifiers, transistors and building the circuits on a breadboard. You are expected to:

  • Design the Digital and Analogue Converter (DAC) and actuator circuits using analogue components available at the University.
  • Simulate the circuits using the ORCAD PSpice Capture CIS software and test the circuit for correct operation.
  • Demonstrate the password-based locking system using your last three digits student ID number as a password.

For a pass mark, you will need to activate one LED using your students ID number. For a merit, you will need to activate one LED using your student ID number and to activate another LED if the ID number is not correct. For a distinction, you will need to enhance security of the locking system using your student ID number and the temperature sensor.

You are required to submit a short report of 1000 words explaining your proposed design and concept via Blackboard. You should also arrange with the lecturer to demonstrate your developed system by 28th April 2026. This demonstration should take no more than 5 minutes.

Please note that this is an individual coursework assessment.
