Please read carefully and see links of the 3 poems and picking one

For this paper, you will be writing a close reading analysis of what the poem says. No research is permitted on this poem; resist the temptation to consult Sparknotes and other websites (and note that their commentary is often unreliable).

The goal here is to make a case for your own interpretation of the poem using the text as evidence.

Choose one of the poems from below that interests or intrigues you.

To help you set up the analysis, feel free to do the pre-writing exercises of writing a summary and paraphrase, and then identifying the main idea so that you can create a thesis statement for the paper. Then start working through the poem line-by-line to identify how the poem creates that idea. Consider all the literary elements we’ve been discussing so far.

The paper is a five-paragraph academic essay containing the following elements:

Title: The title will indicate the main focus of the essay.  Feel free to be creative with your title. Introduction The introductory paragraph will give background on the poem. The title and author should be identified in the introductory paragraph. Thesis statement: The thesis should be the last sentence of the introduction. For review and guidance on constructing your thesis statement, you may consult THE WRITING PROCESS  At least three supporting paragraphs: Each paragraph of the paper will begin with a clear topic sentence that makes a point about the poem that supports the paper’s argument. Each sentence in the paragraph will support that claim with the paper’s analysis, using examples from the poem. Make sure that when quoting phrases from the poem, you integrate or introduce the quote. For example, a sentence can begin with, “The poem begins with…” or “in the second stanza…” The paper should then present quoted phrases or short lines in the poem to help support the points.  As the analysis continues, details about the poetic technique should be included. Line numbers or any other in-text citations for this poem must be included, and please cite the poem in a Works Cited entry in MLA 8th edition style. See MLA Formatting for Short Quotations for reference. The paper’s concluding paragraph will reiterate the thesis and then reflect on what we now know about the story as a result of the paper’s analysis. You will choose one poem from the following selection of poems:

“A Narrow Fellow in The Grass” by Emily Dickinson” “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” by Dylan Thomas “Evolution” by Sherman Alexie  This paper should be 2-3 pages (500-750 words) and follow MLA Format, including 1-inch margins, Times New Roman 12-point font, and double-spaced. No outside research is required for this assignment.
