Professional consulting can be transformational, shaping the way organisations think and operate. Consultants may assist clients to develop strategic objectives, consider new market opportunities, identify innovative ways of working and build organisational and staff capability. For professional consultants to deliver effective clientcentric consulting they must have an in-depth understanding of consulting practice.

Assessment brief CMI 722 has been designed to equip professional consultants with the knowledge and understanding of the core processes for client-centric consulting. They will appraise methodologies for identifying consulting opportunities and for developing winning proposals. Professional consultants will also consider strategies for delivering consultancy tailored to client needs. They will make recommendations for building lasting client relationships and consider how future consulting opportunities can be developed and realised.

Assessment Task and World Count

Assessment brief CMI 722 features the following assessment tasks. Further detail is provided against each assessment task within the brief.

Guideline Word Count

The written word, however generated and recorded, is expected to form the majority of assessable work produced by Learners at Level 7. The amount and volume of work for this unit should be broadly comparable to a word count of 4000-4500 words within a margin of +/-10%.  The excessive use of word count is not grounds for referral, however the CMI reserves the right to return work to the Centre for editing and resubmission by the Learner.

The following are excluded from inclusion in word count, if used and not required by the assessment brief: an introduction to a job role, organisation or department, index or contents pages, headings and subheadings, diagrams, charts and graphs, reference list or bibliography, reflective statement drawn from undertaking the assignment and how this has impacted on the learner’s work. Practice Of Professional Consulting

The assessment activity that covers the entire unit requires the professional consultant to:

Develop a practical guide for new and aspiring consultants entitled:

‘The practice of professional consulting’

You are required to present the guide in TWO (2) sections with additional subheadings. The information required to complete each section is given in the guidance below.

Section 1: ‘The process for client-centric professional consulting’

  1. Conceptualise a process for client-centric professional consulting (AC1.1)

Section 2: ‘The practice of professional consulting’ 

2a. Approaches to identify and generate consulting opportunities (AC2.1)

2b. Structure and content of proposals for different clients (AC2.2)

2c. Methodologies for delivering client-centric consulting (AC2.3)

2d. Approaches to extend client engagement beyond the consultancy contract (AC2.4)

Section 1: The Process For Client-Centric Professional Consulting

It is essential for professional consultants to fully understand the process of client-centric consulting which is tailored to the needs of the client and an organisation.

The aim of Section 1 is to equip professional consultants with an in-depth understanding of the process of clientcentric consulting. They will be able to articulate each stage of professional consulting which will include making an initial contact with the client, planning, implementation, evaluation and conclusion.

With reference to the delivery of client-centric consulting for an organisation you know well or have researched, you are required to:

Produce a diagram, model, chart or graphic with annotations entitled:

You are required to conceptualise a process for client-centric professional consulting (AC1.1)

Guidance for completion of Section 1
●      The diagram, model, chart or graphic must be based on the process for client-centric consulting, which would be delivered to an organisation you know well or have researched.

●      The diagram, model, chart or graphic must include each step of the consulting process.

●      The diagram, model, chart or graphic must be presented professionally (presentation software may be used).

●      Your diagram, model, chart or graphic must be underpinned with relevant theoretical concepts.

●      Please refer to the indicative content for the assessment criteria (AC) outlined in the unit specification.

Section 2: The Practice Of Professional Consulting

Professional consultants must be able to understand the practice of professional consulting. They must be able to understand different approaches to generating consulting opportunities and be familiar with the structure and content of proposals and how these can be tailored to the needs of clients. Importantly, professional consultants must also be able to evaluate methodologies for delivering consulting and know how to extend client engagement beyond an initial contract. The aim of Section 2 in the practical guide is to equip professional consultants with an indepth understanding of the practice of professional consulting.

Section 2 is entitled:

‘The practice of professional consulting’

This section has FOUR (4) subheadings. Reference must be given to theory and include the use of well-chosen examples throughout.

2a. Approaches to identify and generate consulting opportunities

You are required to critique a minimum of THREE (3) approaches to identify and generate consulting opportunities (AC2.1)

2b. Structure and content of proposals for different clients

You are required to recommend structure and content of proposals for a minimum of TWO (2) clients (AC2.2)

2c. Methodologies for delivering client-centric consulting

You are required to critically evaluate methodologies for delivering client-centric consulting (AC2.3)

2d. Approaches to extend client engagement beyond the consultancy contract

You are required to recommend approaches to extend client engagement beyond the consultancy contract (AC2.4)

●         The practical guide must include reference to theoretical concepts and well-chosen examples.

●         The practical guide must include subheadings. You may choose to include tables and diagrams as appropriate to support the written text.

●         In preparation to complete the practical guide, take time to reflect on the content you feel would be essential for all new and aspiring professional consultants.
