Instructions:
Research and Understand Child Abuse:
· Begin by researching the different types of child abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, and neglect).

· Use Chapter 8 in your textbook, as well as the posted websites, to guide your research. You may also use additional reputable resources.
Create the Response Plan:
· Develop a detailed plan of action that can be easily referenced by educators. Your plan should include the following sections:
1) Types of Child Abuse:
· Provide a brief overview of the four types of child abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, and neglect).
2) Signs to Look For:
· List and describe at least 5 signs of potential child abuse for each type (physical, emotional, sexual, and neglect).
· Explain how these signs might present in an educational setting.
3) Responding to a Child’s Disclosure:
· Outline the steps to take if a child discloses abuse, including:
· How to listen to the child.
· What to say and what not to say.
· How to document the disclosure accurately.
4) Who to Contact:
· Identify the key individuals or agencies to contact if you suspect or know that a child is being abused. This should include:
· School officials (e.g., school counselor, principal).
· Local child protective services in North Carolina.
· Law enforcement if immediate danger is present.
5) Making a Referral in North Carolina:
· Describe the process for making a referral to child protective services in North Carolina, including:
· Contact information for the appropriate agency.
· Steps to take when making a referral, including the information to provide.
· Follow-up procedures after making the referral.

· Your response plan should be 2-4 pages in length, clearly organized, and designed to be distributed to other educators.
