1. How would you go about working with a Native American woman who appears to be experiencing physical and/or sexual abuse, but is reluctant to discuss her experiences with you? What might be pertinent cultural considerations in your work with this client?

2. During a family session with an Asian American family, you note that the children, who were born in this country, highly value individuality and independence, while the parents expect obedience and sacrifice for the family. How would you address this situation?

3. Describe the traditional Latinx family structure and the associated cultural values. What implications do they have for client resilience, client stress, and for culturally competent counseling practice? How can these strengths be capitalized on and incorporated into counseling? What can counselors do to reduce the likelihood that these values will not become a source of misunderstanding/misinterpretation in counseling?

4. Discuss some of the acculturation-related issues experienced by Arab Americans and Muslim Americans. Include prevailing US stereotypes about members of each group. Discuss each group separately.

5. Provide examples of potential microaggressions that can occur when counseling a Jewish American? What can counselors do to minimize the likelihood that such microaggressions will take place?

6. You are a counselor who has been assigned the following case:

An unmarried lesbian couple would like to adopt a child from the foster care system. However, one member of the couple, your client—a 35-year-old lawyer from a prestigious law firm—is not “out” to her family or colleagues. Her partner desperately wants a child but your client fears that having a child will “out” her sexual orientation to her parents and colleagues.

How would you proceed in counseling this client? What other information do you need? What would be some of the challenges you might face?
