Assessment 1 (points 1-9) develops the skills for using different software to find and evaluate secondary data, develop a focused business question, undertake qualitative thematic analysis, communicate findings effectively, and demonstrate basic quantitative insights.

Extreme day trips (EDTs) occur across a 24 hour period. This is an area in growth and many businesses (influencers, tour guides, restaurants, visitor attractions, airports, airlines, luggage companies, taxis, online booking sites and so on) are trying to maximise business from them.

Section A: Data Considerations: (Points 1–3)

1.Find a relevant company of your choice that has an obvious link to EDTs on the FAME database. Look for data from the chosen company that highlights the issues with utilising secondary data to make business decisions. Take a screenshot of the WHOLE screen and add this to the assessment for point 1. Use the data to highlight why caution needs to be taken when utilising secondary data for business decisions. Whilst the answer can include some details not on the screenshot, the majority should relate to the FAME data and attempts should be made to evidence this (arrows, letters, data quotes and so on) (up to 300 words). (The company chosen for point 1 does not have to be used again in assessment 1).

2.Create and clearly state one focused Extreme Day Trip (EDT) business question (maximum 35 words). The question MUST relate to one of the 6 EDT topics listed below. The business question will be answered using the qualitative dataset collected for point 3. In no more than 100 words, explain why your business question is relevant to the chosen EDT topic.

Extreme time flights (ultra early and/or ultra late)
Airport to city EDTs
Micro adventure EDTs (activity/sports related)
Culinary related EDTs
Luggage free/minimalist EDTs
Extreme weather EDTs (snow, heat, clear sky and so on)
3.Find up to 3,000 words (a minimum of 1500 words is recommended) of publicly available qualitative content. For example, newspapers, blogs, interviews, reviews that relate to the EDT business question generated for point 2. All qualitative data MUST be included in Appendix 1. Data must be genuine, each different source referenced, traceable and not created. It must all relate to the business question for point 2.

Section B: Qualitative Analysis (Points 4–5)

For guidance use Braun & Clarke’s (2006) Thematic Analysis.

4.Using Taguette software undertake a qualitative analysis of what has been collated for point 3 (Appendix 1).

5.Export and include the tables generated by Taguette that show coding of the qualitative data and themes generated (detailed explanations beyond the tables are not required).

Section C: Findings (Points 6–8)

Communicating complex data and outputs effectively to wider audiences is a critical aspect of the data analysis process.

6.Create a mind map to show the Taguette outputs. Ensure that the site/software used for creating the mind map is referenced (only the diagram required, no detailed explanations).

7. Provide up to 500 words of referenced critical writing communicating the qualitative outputs (points 2 – 6). This section should relate to the business question (point 2) and critically evaluate the implications of findings.

8. Using the outputs from the qualitative data create an infographic. Only one infographic is required, use your judgement to create an infographic that you consider contains the most relevant information from your analysis and is impactful. The site used to create the infographic must be referenced. (Only the infographic is required, no explanations).
