This second-year respiratory nursing case study asks students to write up the care of one person they nursed on placement who had a respiratory condition. The whole case is framed by the Roper, Logan and Tierney model and the nursing process, with a focused respiratory assessment, three prioritised nursing problems, the pharmacology of the main medicines and the nurse’s role in education and discharge planning.
Assignment
Select an individual you have cared for during practice placement who has a respiratory condition relevant to this module.
Using the Roper, Logan and Tierney model of nursing and the nursing process, discuss the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based, person-centred nursing care provided to this individual. Incorporate a focused respiratory assessment relevant to the individual’s condition and explain how findings from the overall nursing assessment inform nursing priorities. Demonstrate an understanding of the underlying pathophysiology and pharmacological management of the condition, and discuss the nurse’s role in prevention, education and promoting the individual’s ongoing health and well-being.
Apply relevant national and international evidence throughout to justify nursing decisions and evaluate the quality of care provided.
To maintain patient confidentiality and comply with NMBI ethical and professional standards, pseudonyms must be used for patients, ward and hospital throughout the assignment. All identifiable information must be anonymised to protect patient privacy and ensure confidentiality.
Structure
Your case study should include an introduction, a clearly structured main body and a conclusion. Use the following headings to guide your discussion. Avoid repeating information across sections; refer back to earlier discussion where appropriate.
1. Introduction and presentation of the individual (5 marks)
Briefly introduce the individual, their respiratory condition and the care setting. Include relevant background information and use a pseudonym to maintain confidentiality.
2. Understanding the respiratory condition (20 marks)
Discuss the epidemiology, aetiology and pathophysiology of the chosen condition, relating these to the individual’s risk factors and clinical manifestations.
3. Assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of person-centred nursing care (30 marks)
Using the Roper, Logan and Tierney model of nursing and the nursing process, discuss the assessment of the individual’s physical, psychological and social needs, incorporating a focused respiratory assessment relevant to their condition. Present and explain the significance of relevant assessment findings, including respiratory observations, other clinical findings, investigations and information gathered from the individual. Demonstrate how findings from the overall assessment inform the identification and prioritisation of three nursing problems. For each priority problem, discuss planned person-centred outcomes, evidence-based nursing interventions and evaluation of care, explaining how the individual was involved in decisions. Focus on the activities of living most relevant to the individual; you do not need to discuss all 12. A full advanced respiratory examination is not required.
4. Pharmacological management (15 marks)
Discuss the main medicines relevant to the individual’s condition, including their purpose, relevant adverse effects, nursing responsibilities and the individual’s response to treatment.
5. Prevention, education and ongoing care (15 marks)
Discuss the nurse’s role in prevention, health promotion and education to support the individual’s ongoing health and well-being. Include self-management, checking understanding and discharge planning where relevant.
6. Conclusion (5 marks)
Summarise the main learning from the case and its implications for your future nursing practice. Do not introduce new information.
7. Reference list (10 marks)
Include a reference list immediately after the conclusion. List all sources cited in the case study in accordance with the DkIT Harvard Referencing Guidelines. Ensure that every in-text citation has a corresponding entry in the reference list. The reference list is excluded from the 2,000-word limit.
Academic and Presentation Requirements
- Maintain confidentiality by using a pseudonym and omitting identifying details about the individual, staff and clinical setting.
- Support your discussion with current evidence-based literature and relevant Irish professional and clinical guidance.
- Go beyond describing care: explain the reasons for decisions, evaluate outcomes and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Use the DkIT Harvard Referencing Guidelines for all in-text citations and the reference list, and acknowledge all sources, including paraphrased material.
- Use 12-point Arial or Calibri, 1.5-line spacing and numbered pages.
Marking Allocation (100 marks)
| Introduction | 5 |
| Respiratory condition | 20 |
| Assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation | 30 |
| Pharmacological management | 15 |
| Prevention, education and ongoing care | 15 |
| Conclusion | 5 |
| Referencing (in-text citation accuracy 4, reference-list accuracy/completeness 4, matching citations to reference list 2) | 10 |
The focused respiratory assessment forms part of the overall holistic nursing assessment and is assessed within the 30 marks for nursing assessment and care. The grading grid describes bands from Fail (0–39) through Pass, 2.2, 2.1 and 1st (70–100), judged on case presentation and respiratory knowledge, nursing care and clinical reasoning, referencing, and presentation, grammar and spelling.

Most marks here sit in section 3, so plan the case around it. Choose a patient whose condition gives you clear respiratory findings, such as COPD, pneumonia or asthma, and report the observations that matter: respiratory rate, SpO2 against target range, work of breathing, sputum and any ABG or chest X-ray results. Let those findings lead to three ranked nursing problems under the relevant activities of living, for example breathing, mobilising and communicating, and evaluate each one rather than just describing what was done.
